Inlays and Onlays
If you experience tooth decay to a severe enough degree that dental fillings are not feasible, yet there is enough healthy tooth left that a dental crown is not necessary, your tooth can be restored with the use of inlays and onlays.

Inlays and onlays are similar to dental crowns, except that these restorations do not cover the whole tooth; rather, they restore only a portion of your natural crown. As their names indicate, an inlay restores the interior of your tooth, while an onlay restores the exterior and cusps.

Veneers
Dental veneers are excellents multi-purpose tooth restorations. These thin shells, often made from porcelain, affix directly to the front of your natural teeth. Veneers solve a number of cosmetic dentistry issues, like chipped teeth, gaps between teeth, discoloration, and even misalignment.

Crowns and Fixed Bridges
If tooth decay gets to the point where neither fillings nor inlays and onlays will adequately restore your tooth, a dental crown may be necessary. A crown will cover all of your tooth above the gumline. This is useful when decay or an injury has compromised the integrity of your natural crown, but your root is still healthy.

If your tooth is too unhealthy to save, an extraction may be necessary to protect the health of your remaining teeth. In this case, a fixed bridge can be used to replace the missing tooth, ensuring your chewing power is not weakened and that you don’t have a gap in your smile.

A fixed bridge uses dental crowns placed over two healthy teeth on either side of the gap to anchor another crown in the center. This process literally bridges the gap left by the missing tooth with a restorative dental crown and bridge.

Tooth-Colored Dental Fillings
The last thing you want in a restoration is for it to be noticeable and unsightly, which can be the case with traditional silver-colored tooth fillings. Here at Vail Valley Dental Care, we use a tooth-colored composite resin for our dental fillings, so we can repair your tooth without compromising the aesthetics of your smile. If you have silver-colored fillings from a previous restoration, we can safely remove those fillings and replace them with tooth-colored ones.

Dental Implants
For a tooth replacement that closely matches the look and function of your natural teeth, dental implants are the ideal solution. These titanium screws are surgically placed in your jaw, where they will bond with your natural bone, creating a synthetic root. Your dental implant can be used to replace a single tooth with a porcelain crown, a series of teeth with a fixed bridge, or an entire row of teeth with implant-supported dentures.

Root Canal Therapy
When tooth decay progresses to the point that the pulp at the center of your tooth becomes infected, your tooth can still be saved with a root canal. This procedure removes the infected material from the center of the tooth and replaces it with an antibacterial resin. The tooth is then topped with a restorative crown supported by your natural root.
